‘DAVID BOYAJIAN, INSIDE OUT’ SHOW AND SALE OF SCULPTURE BASED ON NATURE SET FOR VETERANS DAY WEEKEND IN RIDGEFIELD, CT
Having built a national reputation as a sculptor by resolving hard steel edges into elegant organic forms, David Boyajian has taken his aesthetic to a new level in “David Boyajian, Inside Out,” the third annual sculpture exhibit and sale at his home studio and sculpture garden in Ridgefield, CT., November 9-11.
More than 50 works in a variety of materials and sizes will be on view. Among them are several sculptures that mark an evolutionary departure from Boyajian’s “Bud & Seed Series.” Those steel pieces suggested, in a magnified scale, the twisting, arcing forms of seeds exploding into growth.
In his new steel abstractions, the forms recede from the maturing stalks that became his trademark into fresh bold sculptures. Botanically titled Cotyledons, their embryonic leaves burst through the seed coat of a young plant literally initiating the process of photosynthesis. Boyajian’s fabrications attempt to freeze this muscular spurt of nature in midair. They are spontaneous yet balanced in their formal beauty. Boyajian explains, “My Cotyledons metaphorically exemplify the vital source that allows life to form.”
Unapologetic for his life-affirming art because he is “always grounded in reality,” Boyajian’s art continues to celebrate man’s and the planet’s renewal. Thematically, the current show extends a journey that began a decade ago with such public commissions as his massive “Harvest Gate” at Hartford’s Main Street Farmers Market, a clarion call signaling that hunger remains a world crisis.
His earliest works were also abstract expressions but of the figure and carved in wood. Seeking relative permanence, he plunged into modern materials such as mild steel, stainless steel, and bronze – reflecting current technology and a modernist sensibility. A number of these sculptures are included in this exhibition. His mastery of new fabricating techniques is kept fresh through his personal and commissioned projects and also by his hands-on teaching style.
Boyajian has taught at the Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan, Connecticut, for 17 years and is its director of Sculpture Studies. He graduated from Alfred University, received an MFA from Maryland Institute’s Rinehart School of Sculpture, and studied at the famed Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
He has exhibited widely, including at the National Academy (NYC), winning the Sidney Simon Sculpture Award; twice at Fordham University at Lincoln Center; Albright Knox Museum, in Buffalo and at the United Nations. His work has been acquired and commissioned by a number of institutions and private collectors nationwide.
“David Boyajian, Inside Out” is open to the public during the long Veterans Day Weekend, November 9-11, from 10:00 a.m. until sunset, rain or shine. Guided tours and refreshments are available. His home studio is located at 462 North Salem Road (Route 116), two miles north of Ridgefield’s Main Street and a like distance southeast of North Salem, NY.
