"I employ a certain amount of energy in the way I define my shapes, and that varies as I increase the scale.

With my large seed forms, they open, reach out, and grow quickly. Particularly inspiring are the stem structures …  elongated, narrow, delicate, finally overpowered by the seed masses they support.."

In an oblique, evolutionary step forward, Boyajian demands even more of us with the new steel pieces he calls “Cotyledons”
(pronounced kot l eed′ unz).

That is the botanical nomenclature for the first tiny leaves on a newly developed plant emerging from the seed embryo.

Magnified in scale, the Cotyledons aspire to portray process: the moment when photosynthesis begins.

"I found many ways of fabricating forms, whether hammering them out of steel or using patterned pieces to fabricate volumetric steel masses. I weld the component parts into forms that interact with light, producing contrasts -- enhancing the piece within its environment."

Grace Glueck
The New York Times
"Boyajian's buds and seeds rise well above
 the usual dross."

Christopher Atamian

Review Magazine
called Boyajian's Genesis "a quietly poetic series of sculptures; a powerful, sweet exhibition indeed."

Ariella Budick

Newsday
"David Boyajian's monumental seedlings harden the ephemeral into steel. Young plants gently unfurling and reaching for the sky transmute into massive rust colored slabs of metal, able to withstand the assaults of time."

"..I was studying the Amaryllis -- it's growth from bulb to stem, through blossoming form. My observations led me to what has become the Bud & Seed Series. I produced this group of ten  sculptures in my mind and my studio within the same time sequence the flower matured. I investigated the elegance of posture and pose -- the tapered line of the stem demanding correctness. Some of these pieces declare climax while others beckon the release of a whisper."
